a world that continues to struggle under increasing energy demands. And, the effort and money it takes to become an energy efficient businesses is surprisingly little.  Simple upgrades can quickly transform any business into an energy efficient one.

1- Replace Old Refrigerators and Freezers

Old refrigerators and freezers are some of the biggest energy hogs. The best way to reduce your monthly electric bill, replace old refrigerators and freezers with new, energy efficient, models. Many cities even offer incentive programs for those who want to trade old for new. Still, it can cost a lot to buy a new refrigerator/freezer, even with incentive programs. If you’re not in the position to make a big purchase you can replace the magnetic gasket lining the door. Over time, gaskets sag, creating gaps through which cold air will leak, reducing energy efficiency. New gaskets are inexpensive and easy to install.

2-Clean Up Those Dust Bunnies Around Your Appliances

Clean electrical appliances are always the most efficient. Keep your appliances clean and improve your energy efficiency. Keep fans, air conditioner filters and refrigerator/freezer coils clean. It’s not time consuming or expensive to keep your appliances clean.  For example, you can clear dust and lint from freezer/refrigerator coils just using a vacuum attachment.

    3- Keep The Doors Closed

The less outside air temperature influences inside air temperature the better. And, most businesses require air conditioning in the summer and heating in the winter. This can cause a huge amount of expansion of energy. To avoid this, try to keep all exterior doors closed as much as possible. If doors have gaps between the door and frame, install weather stripping, which is easy, inexpensive and will save considerable energy. As always, try to maintain a moderate temperature in your business to save more energy.

    4- Washer and Dryer?

Businesses that use washing machines, driers and/or dishwashers also consume considerable amounts of electricity. Be sure each appliance is as full as safely possible before running. Avoid using hot water in the washer and dishwasher and opt instead for warm; heating water requires energy. Use warm air in the clothes drier and remove the clothes when still damp. This saves energy, and also reduces wrinkles if you hang the clothes promptly.

5- Change Your Screen Saver Settings

Virtually every business has at least one computer, but many forget to set the Power Saver. When you're away from the computer, it will go into low-power mode, saving considerable energy, and will power back up as soon as you're ready to use it again.

These are just some of the easy ways your business can have a positive affect on our environment and save money!
